THE Source for the Vintage Instrument World

The mission is a one off chair, stand and guitar combination designed by Galloup Guitars for the 2018 Art Basel celebration in Miami FL. The Mission was displayed at Art Basel as part of the “Functional Art Display”, an exhibit that included some the most influential boutique guitar makers in the world today.

The foundation of The Mission is a custom chair inspired by some of Bryan Galloup’s favorite architects. While most of the design elements of The Mission chair were pulled from Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie mission style of furniture, it also includes elements from Greene and Greene, architects formerly from Pasadena, CA.

The Mission chair was made using the exact processes and materials used in Frank Lloyd Wright’s custom designs right down to the webbing in the seat. It has design features that hold and strategically locate the custom designed Galloup G.4 guitar.

The Mission guitar was created to specifically pair with the chair as one thought. This was Bryan’s “hats off” to Mr. Wright’s ideology about design which is that every component of the buildings he designed had to be a complete thought, right down to the furniture. In designing the guitar, Bryan wanted to pay homage to Miami. For many of his guitars, Bryan pulls elements from the Art Deco era of the 1920’s by inlaying Deco inspired designs. Miami is well known for its Deco District so it made perfect sense to incorporate those Art Deco designs into this piece as well. The end  product of the Deco designs for both the chair and guitar is an evolved style developed by Bryan he calls Deco Nouveau.

But aside from fitting together functionally as a chair and stand, the Galloup Studios team wanted to tie the two together artistically. To accomplish this, design elements in the guitar and the chair complements each other. When the guitar is nestled in its stand, the etchings in the glass panels on the chair and the artistic marquetry inlayed in the back of the Galloup G.4 guitar come together and complete the vision.

Of course the final touch was the addition in a hidden compartment that housed a bottle of wine, an opener a decanter and one wine glass. This says to the player, “This is for you and you alone. Sit down, have some wine, play some guitar and take some time…..for you”.
